‘Fun Day For The Administration’: Social Media Erupts After Supreme Court Strikes Blow To Biden Vax Mandate

Imahe
Politicos and journalists on social media erupted in commentary on Thursday after the Supreme Court blocked a Biden administration mandate that would have forced private businesses with at least 100 employees to require workers to be vaccinated against COVID-19 or submit to regular testing. “OSHA’s COVID–19 Vaccination and Testing; Emergency Temporary Standard, 86 Fed. Reg. 61402, is stayed pending disposition of the applicants’ petitions for review in the United States Court of Appeals for the Sixth Circuit and disposition of the applicants’ petitions for writs of certiorari, if such writs are timely sought. Should the petitions for writs of certiorari be denied, this order shall terminate automatically. In the event the petitions for writs of certiorari are granted, the order shall terminate upon the sending down of the judgment of this Court,” the court said. Reporter Philip Wegmann posted via Twitter that President Joe Biden has had a “tough 48 hours.” “Biden’s Tough 48 Hour...

Supreme Court blocks Biden admin's Covid requirements for workplaces, allows vaccine mandate for health care workers

Imahe
WASHINGTON — The Supreme Court on Thursday blocked the Biden administration’s rule requiring larger businesses to ensure that workers receive the Covid vaccine or wear masks and get tested on a weekly basis. But the court said a separate mandate requiring vaccinations for an estimated 20 million health care workers can be enforced. The workplace rule , announced last fall by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration, required companies with 100 or more employees to ensure that their workers either get vaccinated or wear masks and show negative Covid test results at least once a week. The rule would have covered nearly 80 million American workers, and OSHA estimated it would save over 6,500 lives and prevent 250,000 hospitalizations in the next six months. “Although Congress has indisputably given OSHA the power to regulate occupational dangers, it has not given that agency the power to regulate public health more broadly,” the court’s conservative majority said. “Requiri...

Carhartt: An Unvaxxed Workforce Is A Risk ‘Our Company Is Unwilling To Take’

Imahe
Carhartt, the popular United States manufacturer of durable work gear, sent an e-mail to its 5,500 workers notifying them that they had to receive the COVID-19 vaccine by February 15 in order to continue working for the company. The announcement came a day after the recent United States Supreme Court decision which effectively ended President Joe Biden’s private-sector vaccine mandate for large employers nationwide. Carhartt CEO Mark Valade sent an email stating that all employees had to be vaccinated by February 15, or find a new job. “We put workplace safety at the very top of our priority list and the Supreme Court’s recent ruling doesn’t impact that core value,” the email said, according to MarketWatch. “We, and the medical community, continue to believe vaccines are necessary to ensure a safe working environment for every associate and even perhaps their households,” Valade continued. “While we appreciate that there may be differing views, workplace safety is an area where we...

General Electric Suspends Vaccine Or Test Requirement After Supreme Court Ruling

Imahe
General Electric, one of America’s largest employers, announced on Friday that it has suspended its coronavirus vaccine or test requirement for its employees after the U.S. Supreme Court blocked Democrat President Joe Biden’s vaccine mandate for large businesses this week. “The maker of jet engines, wind turbines and medical scanners confirmed the decision Friday via email,” Bloomberg News reported . “GE is the first major company to announce a halt after the court’s decision Thursday to block the centerpiece of President Joe Biden’s push to boost Covid-19 vaccinations.” The Daily Wire  reported on Thursday that the ruling by the Supreme Court was a major victory for the mandate’s critics, including The Daily Wire which sued the Biden administration in November. The Daily Wire and others appealed to the Supreme Court to block the order after the Sixth Circuit lifted a stay put in place by the Fifth Circuit. “OSHA’s COVID–19 Vaccination and Testing; Emergency Temporary Standar...

Supreme Court blocks Biden Covid vaccine mandate for businesses, allows health-care worker rule

Imahe
Liberal Justices Stephen Breyer, Sonia Sotomayor and Elena Kagan dissented, writing that the majority has usurped the power of Congress, the president and OSHA without legal basis. “In the face of a still-raging pandemic, this Court tells the agency charged with protecting worker safety that it may not do so in all the workplaces needed,” they said in their dissent. “As disease and death continue to mount, this Court tells the agency that it cannot respond in the most effective way possible. Without legal basis, the Court usurps a decision that rightfully belongs to others. It undercuts the capacity of the responsible federal officials, acting well within the scope of their authority, to protect American workers from grave danger,” they wrote. President Joe Biden, in a statement, said the Supreme Court chose to block requirements that are life-saving for workers. Biden called on states and businesses to step up and voluntarily institute vaccination requirements to protect worke...

January 6, 1930 - The first diesel road trip - This Day in Automotive History

Imahe
At 11 years old in 1930, the Cummins Engine Company faced a make or break situation. It was now or never to show the public that diesel motors were a viable option for passenger car travel if they intended to stay in business. To do so, founder Clessie Cummins concocted a marketing stunt that’d once and for all prove diesel engines could compete with gasoline motors in daily drivers. He installed one of his engines in a used Packard and prepped for the first long distance journey in a diesel powered automobile. With the eyes of journalists and the public upon him, he set off from Indianapolis, Indiana for New York City. The 792 mile trip came to a successful end on this day in 1930. Overall, the car used used about 30 gallons of diesel fuel at a cost of less than $1.38.  The Packard received its engine transplant just two weeks before the trip began. The four cylinder Model U Diesel engine weighed in at 1,200 pounds and produced about 50 horsepower at 1,000 RPM. While the engine...

Jon Ossoff of Georgia is set to introduce legislation that would bar members of Congress from holding or trading individual stocks while they’re in elective office, according to The New York Post . The ethics bill — which the 34-year-old freshman Democratic senator reportedly hopes to file once he has a Republican cosponsor — would tackle legislative conflicts of interest by banning members and their families from trading stocks, according to a source in Washington DC with knowledge of the matter. In addition, the legislation would likely mandate that lawmakers place their financial assets in blind trusts — an action that Ossoff took himself after being elected to the Senate in a January 2021 runoff election. The proposed bill would present a huge contrast to House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, who last month publicly def...

Citigroup Prepares to Fire Unvaccinated Workers at the End of January - The New York Times

Imahe
Citigroup will dismiss unvaccinated employees by the end of the month as it presses on with a vaccine requirement the company announced in October. The bank has given staff based in the United States a deadline of Jan. 14 to submit proof of their inoculations against the coronavirus or request religious, medical or legal exemptions, according to a person familiar with the policies, who spoke on the condition of anonymity. Workers who do not comply with the mandate — which requires a full dose of vaccinations, not booster shots as well — will be placed on unpaid leave on Jan. 15 and fired Jan. 31, the person said. The person added that some staff might not receive year-end bonuses unless they signed documents agreeing not to sue the company. More than 90 percent of Citigroup’s 65,000 U.S. employees have complied with the requirement, the person said. Bloomberg News reported the news earlier. Vaccine rules are a delicate issue for Wall Street firms and other large employers. JPMor...
