Mackinaw City Businesses Speak Out Against Family Business, Lieghio’s Declare it Racially Motivated

Businesses are calling out a family in Mackinaw City that’s been around since 1953 and owns many of the hotels and restaurants. This comes after a video of one of their employees berating a customer went viral.

Some say it’s not a surprise to see their employees act that way.

“Ever since we’ve been here–shocking stories, really similar to that, and just all kinds of scams and the ways they treat people,” said Kim Yellen, Owner of Signs of Mackinaw City. “They just don’t care.”

Some accuse the Lieghio’s of having too much of a hold on the city.

“It’s scary because of the way the community reacts to them,” said Taelar Steward, Owner of Strait to the Roots. “We’re all scared. The power and the interactions they have with us is threatening.”

Enzo Lieghio said this is nothing more than a racist attack against their Italian heritage.

“This is not a new issue,” said Lieghio. “This has been an issue since 1953 when our first ancestors went to mackinaw city and started 5 hotels in Mackinaw city at the time. That’s when all of this started. It has never ceased.”

As for the video going around the internet, Lieghio says it shouldn’t shatter what their family has built for Mackinaw City.

“Right now our family is being attacked from an incident that was negative, that we never approved of, that we never condoned that an employee did,” said Lieghio. “We apologized and we continue to apologize.”

Lieghio maintains they will continue to advertise and improve Mackinaw City for all in the community.

“We don’t discourage anyone from going into any restaurant or pizza place or whatever,” Lieghio said. “Again, we promote a lot of them that aren’t ours. I mean, if someone wants something we want them to be happy in Mackinaw City which is our end goal.”
