The MEN’S chief Manchester United writer Samuel Luckhurst participated in a Facebook Live on deadline day, discussing all things surrounding the club’s rollercoaster of a summer.

Hunt for midfielder set to continue

Luckhurst : “It was very difficult for United to justify signing a midfielder without a significant sale and Donny van de Beek has had a disastrous year but he was never going to be sold this transfer window.

“It still wouldn’t surprise me if a club comes in at the 11th hour to try and take him on loan. That is just me surmising a possibility where these things happen on deadline day something just comes out of the blue.

"It would make sense for a club to at least test the waters with Van de Beek and see if there’s any chance of taking him from United.

"There are a lot of midfielders at United and a lot of the names who have been linked this summer have been linked baselessly.

"Ruben Neves has been linked with United on a recurring basis the last three years and because United signed a Portuguese who is represented by Jorge Mendes last week, fans thought ‘why can’t the club sign another Portuguese who is represented by Jorge Mendes?’, as he seems to be attainable from Wolves.”

“But if that was going to happen, it would have happened a while ago.

Camavinga and Rice pursuits

Luckhurst : "Eduardo Camavinga - there were exploratory talks held there, but as I reported over a month ago, United discovered that his preference was to move to Spain and here we are on deadline day and he is about to join Real Madrid.

"Declan Rice is interested in joining United, but that was never going to happen this year because of his contract length; he’s tied to West Ham until 2024. I suspect this time next year Declan Rice will have a new club.

"Whether that’s United or another club we don’t know yet of course but he is a player of interest to United and it’ll be interesting to see how that will develop next year.

"Chelsea seem to have taken a liking to him. Manchester City, Fernandinho probably won’t be at the club next year so will they be tempted to go for Rice as well? I think he is in a very enviable position where he could have the pick of the lot next year in the summer transfer window. ”

Successful transfer window?

Luckhurst : “The priorities for United this summer were a winger and a centre-back, then Ronaldo became available. It wasn’t just a case of Ronaldo becoming available, it was more of the fact that he was going to Manchester City and United felt they had to prevent that from happening so they’ve prevented that from happening and Ronaldo has his homecoming.

"In terms of the feeling in the club, they are pretty thrilled with the business they’ve done this summer. They’ve got three significant players who have come in, in Varane, Ronaldo and Sancho. That highlights the pull of United’s deal that Varane was only prepared to leave Real Madrid as long as he was going to United.”

“Jadon Sancho was always going to United - it was always going to happen sooner or later - and Ronaldo wanted a homecoming. He could’ve gone to Manchester City who have got a better coach, a better team and a better squad but he wanted United.”

“As soon as United came in, he told City he had no interest in joining them such is his strong attachment to United and of course Sir Alex Ferguson’s intervention on Friday morning was crucial to that given the bond he has with Ronaldo.

"So United, although they’re not going to be signing a new midfielder, it looks like they are pretty relaxed about the situation because of the options they have got.”
