A small-business owner could be on the hook for tens of thousands of dollars in fees after her container was flagged for inspection by the Canada Border Services Agency amid  international shipping congestion. Xiao Jing He, from Burnaby, B.C., is hoping to start a construction management company in the Lower Mainland. She says she booked a shipping container to transport all her supplies from China — the first container she’d ever ordered for her small business. When the container arrived at the DeltaPort terminal in Delta, B.C., on Oct. 23, Xiao says it was flagged by the CBSA for random inspection, which required that it be transferred to a specialized marine container examination facility.  However, there is no room at any of the specialized warehouses in the Lower Mainland. Glen de Vries, a businessman who flew to space last month with Jeff Bezos’ company Blue Origin, died in a small plane crash on Thursday. He was 49, according to New Jersey State Police. The plane crashed in Sussex County, New Jersey, just before 3 p.m. De Vries and 54-year-old Thomas P. Fischer were killed. The FAA is investigating the crash, state police said. De Vries, a private pilot in his spare time, was trained as a molecular biologist and co-founded Medidata Solutions, the most-used clinical research platform in the world. The company’s software has managed more than 25,000 clinical trials involving more than seven million patients. The food cabin has been founded by Francesco Scarpetta, who was born in Puglia in Italy, but has lived in Wales for most of his life. During lockdown – Scarpetta lost his job and therefore, set out to create his own business. His intention was to showcase Italian culture in a different way to the usual pizza and pasta. Scarpetta sells dishes from Puglia at the food cabin. One of the signature dishes on the cabin’s menu  is Panzerotto – a savoury dough pouch, that is filled and fried. Scarpetta also offers Focaccia and a few desserts- all made freshly by him in the cabin. Scarpetta explored his passion for cooking when he was very young. When a $23,000 order for food truck equipment came in to Brigitte and Dan Loik’s struggling restaurant equipment business in June, the couple hoped it was a sign the tough times were turning around. The Burnaby, B.C., business was struggling to stay afloat during the pandemic. The customer called himself Barry Alard, and had the identification and Visa card to match. Over the next week and a half, he came in several times to pick up parts of the order and pay for them.
