‘It’s very disheartening’: Family-owned Penticton small business out nearly $100K in equipment after late-night theft
$100K theft from local biz
A local family business in Penticton is reeling after a brazen theft of more than $100,000 of new equipment.
Gartner’s Bobcat and Excavating Service has been operating in town since 1992, as a father-son and family team.
Early Wednesday morning, around 2:30 a.m., their equipment storage lot on Barnes Street was broken into.
A thief in a white pickup truck made off with an 18-foot-long trailer, upon which was a nearly brand-new Hitachi excavator, both of which together were valued at just under $100K.
“It’s very disheartening to have our equipment stolen when we are a small Penticton business and employ only five employees including my dad, Kim Gartner, who is the owner/operator who started the business and continues to go to work everyday and shows no signs of slowing down for retirement at 61 years old,” said Travis Gartner.
Gartner said it’s been a major hit to have the new equipment stolen. Insurance helps, but there is an inevitable delay time in replacing the pieces, and customers suffer in the meantime.
“We have to explain to our customers that the job we’ve been planning to do for them has to get pushed back, we have to find work for our employee that was supposed to run that machine, and never mind lost income the company will lose because of theft. We aren’t a big company with lots of equipment that can just go pull another excavator for another job. This was the only small 35 sized excavator we had so we’re in a bit of a bind,” Gartner explained.
The alleged thief’s truck was caught briefly on security footage, and Gartner hopes anyone with information will reach out to local RCMP.
“So we can hopefully get our stuff back.”
