Downtown business to serve roughly 120 free meals on Christmas Eve - Guelph News

The owners of Gin Mill are pulling their sleeves to cook hearty meals for the community on Christmas Eve. 

Starting Friday at 5 p.m. anyone can walk up to their restaurant and get a meal for free. No questions asked.

“There’s no judgment, there’s no strings, it literally doesn’t matter who you are, it doesn’t matter what situation you’re in. If you benefit from a meal then you’re more than welcome to come get one,” said Brandon Rennie who will be at the restaurant all day Friday with co-owner Shannon Mathews. 

The duo will be cooking roast ham, sorted veggies with fresh cut fries and rolls. There will also be vegetarian options. 

Rennie said the restaurant had to slow down an initiative that saw them give out weekly free meals which began in March when businesses reopened in September. He hopes this Christmas initiative will be seen as an extension of their weekly meals. 

“It feels like putting a bow on this year. This has been a tough one for a lot of people. And we’re definitely not out of the woods yet. So I think reminding people that we’re still in this together is an important message I think,” said Rennie. 

With the purchase of three big hams, Rennie said he expects to be giving approximately 120 meals on Friday. 

“I’ll tell you this, if there’s people lined up beyond that, then we’ll make something else. I don’t think anyone’s gonna leave hungry,” said Rennie. 

Rennie said the best part about the meals is that the restaurant asks no questions and nobody requesting a free meal is turned away. 

Before kicking off the Sunday meal program in March, Rennie approached organizations who provide food to those in need Downtown Guelph and he learned that there was a need for meals specifically on Sunday. 

He said the weekly meals connected them to many people downtown and helped fill a need for Sunday meals in Downtown Guelph.

“There wasn’t a meal Sunday night. So taking that on meant that we got to fill that,” said Rennie.
